NCMC at the Aorere Enduro by Dr Dinah

As an enthusiastic mountain biker and member of Nelson Mountain Biking Club I was keen that NCMC could support the club and join in the fun at the Aorere Enduro. This International level mountain biking race here in beautiful Nelson did not disappoint. Three days of top quality racing by locals, fellow Kiwis and international riders on Nelsons amazing mountain biking trails was exciting and fun.

It was a beautiful sunny weekend, and the tracks were in tip top condition. With approximately 180 riders in the event our team of Bobbie Hutton, our practice nurse, Dr Katie Maver and myself set up our tent, and were ready for whatever the day would bring.

I am delighted to say we saw only a few injuries, a good outcome for all.. There were a few bumps and scrapes but overall, we could soak up the wonderful atmosphere of the race village.

A couple of riders presented with bumps to the head. Concussion is appropriately getting much greater press recently. A concussion is a mild brain injury. It happens when a bump, blow or shake to your head or body causes your brain to shake inside your skull. A concussion affects how your brain functions and may occur with or without loss of consciousness. If you have experienced a concussion, see a doctor as soon as possible.

How you look after yourself after a concussion is important. This website has some good information and advice. Top tips are: 1) avoid further concussions, this may mean staying out of your sport for a few weeks, 2) take it easy for 48 hours, no alcohol, quiet atmosphere, avoid screens, 3) gentle exercise, that doesn’t shake up your head should be gradually introduced. It is important to seek medical advice to avoid long term complications of concussion.

If you are struggling with the consequences of a past concussion, your GP can give helpful advice, or refer you on to a specialist clinic. I have found The Concussion Repair Manual, by Dr Dan Engle and interesting and helpful read for people struggling with post concussion syndrome..
